I’ve had my share of fish and chips growing up because my mom loved them. I remember going to the CNE every year as a family and one of the highlights was going to the food building and getting some fish and chips from the place by the doors. It was always fresh and just so good! But then the unthinkable happened. Their prices slowly went up every year and I think now it’s about $14. When I’m out and about, I still get it from time to time but nothing could ever compare. It was never done right and the fish was just stringy. So imagine discovering this place!

Me and my boyfriend were wandering the streets of Queen Street East a month or so ago and I had a really bad fish and chips hankering. We walked for quite awhile because I refused to give up my search while he, on the other hand, was dehydrated. Feeling bad, I was about to give up my craving when we saw the yellow sign sticking out in the distance. Success!

I will be honest with you, I didn’t know what to think when I walked in because although it was cozy, it was very old-fashioned and many of the things looked like they’ve been there for awhile. There also didn’t seemed to be a ventilation system. But we were already there so might as well give it a try. Their menu is small and while they sell things separately, you can get the fish and chips and a drink for about $10.

Your fish, halibut by the way, is handed to you the old-fashioned way, when establishments used to wrap it in newspapers and place it in carton trays. Personally, I thought it was cool! The man that was there that day took his time to watch over the fish while it cooked and was extremely nice when it came to the ketchup and malt vinegar. He’s really a nice man and after reading around, I learned that him and his wife have been running the shop for over 50 years! Wow, right?

So remember my little story about my childhood and never finding my ideal FC again? Well I’ve found them. The fish is huge and just so crisp on the outside. The inside was flaky and tender and just so good. I heard the chips are also hand cut so everything literally is handmade.

If you are a true lover of fish and chips, you have to go here at least once in your lifetime. Then you can come back! I plan to return but the only problem is, it’s a little out of my way. But fret not, I will go!
